Your B & W photo makes me feel I was one of those students. I remember the drivers would say," Move to the back" because the students would stand at the front, making it impossible for other passengers to move to the empty seats at the back.
Once, a certain school's students were banned from the bus because they were so rude.

You are a brave man! I sometimes take the bus to uni, but only after the end of the school rush - after 9 am!
